After a slow start to the season, the Geneseo varsity softball team grabbed its first conference win of the season over Streator.
Geneseo vs. Streator
Geneseo returned home April 2 to face Streator and notched the squad's first win of the season, 13-5 in conference action.
The Lady Leafs struck first with three runs in the first inning highlighted by a two-run home run by Darian Gillette for the 3-0 lead.
Streator briefly grabbed the lead in the second inning as the Bulldogs plated five runs, but Geneseo countered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to regain control, 7-5.
The Lady Leafs knocked in one run in the fourth and five more in the fifth, while the defense held off the Bulldogs to secure the win.
Jennifer Yager recorded the win for Geneseo as she gave up no runs, no hits and struck out four in five innings; while Jena Reddig pitched one inning and allowed eight hits, five runs and struck out two.
Sierra Ricketts paced Geneseo in the lead-off position with four hits.
Reddig (6 RBIs), Megan Shoemaker and Maddy Shoemaker chipped in two hits apiece; while Yager (3 RBIs), Gillette (2 RBIs), Hannah Johnson and Andrea Wagoner (2 RBIs), all finished with one hit, which included a homer by Gillette and a double from Wagoner.
The Lady Leafs started off the season at the Murfreesboro Invite over spring break where the girls went 0-3 in action.
On March 28, Geneseo shut out by a team from Oakland, Tenn., 5-0.
After four scoreless innings, Oakland plated four runs in the fifth, followed by one in the seventh for the win.
Reddig pitched four innings for Geneseo and allowed five hits, four runs and struck out two; while Yager pitched two innings and allowed one hit and one run.
The Lady Leafs were held to only three hits for the game from Ricketts, Gillette and Johnson, which included doubles from Gillette and Johnson.
In the squad's next contest, Geneseo suffered a 10-2 loss to a team from Munford, Tenn. March 28.
Munford jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings. Geneseo got on the board with one run in the third, but Munford countered with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame for an 8-1 score.
The Lady Leafs scored one more run in the top of the fourth; while Munford drove in another two to end the game in five innings.
Gillette pitched one inning for Geneseo and gave up six hits and six runs; Yager pitched two innings and allowed five hits and two runs; and Reddig pitched one inning and gave up three hits and two runs.
Page 2 of 2 - Megan Shoemaker and Yager (1 RBI) led the team at the plate with two hits apiece, which included one double each.
Ricketts and Gillette added one hit each with a double from Ricketts; while Reddig finished the game with an RBI.
In the final game of the team's trip, the Lady Leafs were edged out by a team from Lebanon, Tenn., 3-2 on March 29.
Lebanon struck first with two runs after three scoreless innings, but Geneseo countered with two of its own in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2. Lebanon plated one run in the top of the seventh to regain the lead, and Geneseo was unable to responded in the bottom of the frame.
Reddig pitched four innings for the Lady Leafs and allowed six hits, two runs and struck out five; while Yager pitched three innings and gave up five hits and no runs.
Leading the offensive effort for Geneseo was Yager (2 RBIs) with two hits; while Ricketts, Megan Shoemaker and Johnson added one hit apiece with a double from Ricketts.
The Lady Leafs (1-3 overall and 1-0 in the NIB 12) will be on the road against Rockridge today at 4:30 p.m.
