  • In the heavy-hitting UT Invitational April 6, the Geneseo boys’ track and field team stood up with the best of them and grabbed a third-place finish.
“It was an incredible field and for us to end up third we had a great day,” said head coach Don Fredericks. “We certainly didn’t have everything go right because the conditions were brutal with 35-mile per hour winds, which made it extremely difficult for events like the pole vault.”
Nabbing first-place finishes in the ABC format meet were Ethan Reschke in the 200-meter dash B race, taking the tape in 24.30 seconds; Cameron Panicucci in shot put C with a toss of 45-8; Nick Verbeck in discus B at 136-9; Ryan Webster in high jump C with a leap of 5-8; and Alex Platz in long jump C at 19-9 3/4.
Earning runner-up honors were Jordan Starkey, 3200-m run A race, 9:54.44; Jordan Mielke, 300-m hurdles C race, 43.34; the 4x400-m B relay of Mielke, Jeremy Harper, Mitchell Lamb and Dugan Kuffel, 3:47.68; Verbeck, shot put B, 47-7; A.J. Marmion, discus A, 161-00; and Sawyer Claus, triple jump C, 41 1/2.
Taking home third-place finishes were Nick Fox, 3200-m run C race, 10:48.23; Chaise Blakley, 800-m run C race at 2:14.67; the 4x200-m A relay of Luke Snyder, Webster, Sam Arndt and Josh Beard, 1:38.34; Seeley, 300-m hurdles B race, 42.96; Gage Sears, high jump B, 5-10; and Chase Cahalan, long jump B, 19-4.
In fourth place were Tony Gatter, 3200-m run B race, 10:50.87 and 1600-m run C race, 4:58.74; the 4x800-m B relay of Blakley, CJ Magerkurth, Karl Flynn and Josiah Cropp, 9:26.79; the 4x800-m A relay of David Chenoweth, Mitchell Lawson, Lamb and Dugan Kuffel, 8:38.28; Lawson, 800-m run A race, 2:04.86; Ryan Pitra, 400-m dash B race, 54.28; Ethan Reschke, 400-m dash A race, 52.75; Marmion, shot put A, 47-7; Jay Wilson, pole vault B, 10-6; and Josh Beard, triple jump A, 41-8 3/4.
Rounding out the Top 5 finishes were Mielke, 110-m hurdles B race, 17.59 and triple jump B, 40-6 1/2; the 4x200-m B relay of Harper, Jared Matthews, Erik Sammons and Platz, 1:40.18; Chenoweth, 1600-m run B race, 4:50.16; Starkey, 1600-m run A race, 4:39.83; the 4x400-m A relay of Beard, Lawson, Sammons and Claus, 3:43.31; and Jacob Eaker, discus C, 108-1.
“All-in-all, I thought the guys did a great job,” said Fredericks. “A.J. Marmion opened the outdoor season with a monster throw of 161 which is the second longest discus throw by a junior in school history (seventh overall), and Will Daniels responded to a loaded Division A high jump field with a lifetime best jump of 5-11, which is the sixth-highest freshman jump in school history.”
