  • On the soccer pitch this past week, the Geneseo girls’ soccer team went 2-0 and earned its first conference win, while also bringing home the Urbana Invite title.
    Geneseo vs. Orion-Sherrard
    In non-conference action April 9 in Geneseo, the Lady Leafs shut down visiting Orion-Sherrard, 4-0.
    “We out-matched Orion-Sherrard pretty handily and it was a dominant performance for us,” said head coach Ian Kline. “The girls are playing very well, but we need to improve on our finishing chances. We are getting good chances, but just not putting the finishing touches on. Most of the stuff we are doing just fine, but we just need to finish better.”
    Geneseo’s first goal of the night came from Hannah Pace off the assist from Mallory Wirth at the 25-minute mark for the 1-0 lead. The Lady Leafs went up 2-0 at the half off an own goal at the 40:00-mark.
    It was the Wirth-Pace combo again for a Geneseo goal in the second half, this time with Wirth punching in the goal off the assist from Pace. Cheyenne VanQuakebeke knocked in Geneseo’s final goal of the off the assist from Heather Setser for the win.
    Geneseo finished the contest with 22 shots on goal, and Darci Dietrich had two saves in net. Orion-Sherrard took two shots on goal and had 18 goalie saves.
    Urbana Invite
    Geneseo swept the competition on its way to the championship April 5-6 at the Urbana Invite.
    “The girls played very well,” said Kline. “I knew the girls have the potential to play very good possession soccer, but we still could have finished a few more. Overall, we did a very good job of finishing, and they did what was necessary. That is the best they have played all season.”
    The Lady Leafs nabbed their first win April 5, 2-0 over Mohomet Seymour.
    Rachel Smith scored Geneseo’s lone goal in the first half on the assist from Dani Manna at 19:00; while Wirth punched in the unassisted goal at 37:00 in the second half.
    Geneseo took seven shots on goal and Dietrich had five saves in the net. Mohomet Seymour took five shots on goal and had five saves.
    Geneseo went on to defeat Urbana Central, 1-0 in the next match.
    The Lady Leafs’ only goal came from Pace on the assist from Lauren Coulter at 49:00-mark after a scoreless first half.
    Geneseo finished the game with 12 shots on goal and Dietrich had three saves in net. Urbana Central took three shots on goal and had 11 saves.
    Geneseo nabbed a 2-1 win in the squad’s third match of the invite over Marshfield.
    Page 2 of 2 - Marshfield took the early 1-0 lead in the first half off a goal in the first minute of play. The Lady Leafs punched in two goals in the second half to earn the win off two goals from Wirth — the first on the assist from Manna at 43:00 and the second was unassisted at 51:00.
    The Lady Leafs took seven shots on goal and Dietrich had zero saves in the net; while Marshfield had one shot on goal and had five saves.
    Geneseo vs. Dixon
    The Lady Leafs kicked off the conference schedule with a 6-0 shut out of visiting Dixon April 4.
    Geneseo jumped out to a quick lead as Pace punched in the first goal of the game, unassisted at the 10:00 mark.
    Wirth booted in goal No. 2 for GHS, unassisted at the 11:00 mark; while Shelby Clary headed the ball into the net on the assist from Caitlin Akers at 13:00 to give Geneseo the 3-0 advantage at the half.
    Abby Wilebski scored Geneseo’s first goal of the second half at 50:00, unassisted; followed by Wirth with her second goal on the assist from Rachel Morton at 70:00.
    Wirth completed the hat trick 1 minute later on the assist from Heather Setser for the win.
    Geneseo finished the game with 20 shots on goal and had zero save in the net; while Dixon took zero shots on goal and had 14 saves.
    The Lady Leafs (5-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the NIB 12) will be on the road next against Streator at 4:30 p.m. April 16.
