Er ... OK, we will!

Er … OK, we will!

If you’re anything like us, we know exactly what you need right now: A distraction! With that in mind, we’re kicking off a series of posts spotlighting favorite Springsteen covers chosen by the Blogness staff. Check back over the next week or so as each of our bloggers chooses five (or so) favorites — and let us know what we left out. Up first, Deb captures the mood of the week with some more somber selections:
Kingsley Flood, “Shut Out the Light”: From “Long Distance Salvation: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska,” it’s austere and haunting but somehow energetic, too. Not on YouTube, but you can stream it here.
Matthew Ryan, “Something in the Night”: Tough mood to capture but Matthew manages on this cover from “Light of Day: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen.”
Emmylou Harris, “The Price You Pay”: I’ve always admired these lyrics, and love how Emmylou’s voice makes it sound more like words of wisdom than a lament. (From “Cimarron.”)
Glen Hansard, “Drive All Night”: It’s all about the passion.
Mary Chapin Carpenter, “Dancing in the Dark”: Achingly slow, the music matches the lyrics in Mary’s version.
And my bonus cheat:
Eddie Vedder, “Darkness on the Edge of Town”: Fine, it’s a duet. But “that voice singing his songs,” particularly this one, will not soon be forgotten.
