James R. “Jim” Martins, 82, of Geneseo, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Hammond-Henry Hospital. A funeral service celebrating his life was held Monday, April 15 at First United Methodist Church, Geneseo. The Rev. Dr. Christopher M. Ritter officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. A visitation was held Sunday, April 14 at Vandemore Funeral Homes, Geneseo. Memorials may be left to the James R. Martins Memorial Fund to be distributed to local charities in his memory.
He was born on Aug. 22, 1930, in Geneseo, the son of James Henry and Cassie (Rice) Martins. He married Vivian M. Larson on June 11, 1950, at the Methodist Church, Colona. He farmed for 36 years in rural Geneseo. He belonged to the Methodist Church for many years. He had a lifelong admiration for woodworking and carpentry from making his own toys as a child. He also enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian; two sons and spouses, Robert (Nancy) Martins of Cedarburg, Wis. and Kenneth (Jodi) Martins of Geneseo; two daughters and spouses, Debra (Roger) Granell of Geneseo and Lorri (Curt) Yeater of Geneseo; two daughters-in-law, Kathi Martins of Geneseo and Brenda Martins of Raleigh, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and two sisters, Shirley Bengston and Marilyn Mason. He was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel Bruce Martins and Craig Allen Martins.
