  • Gary Zum Mallen of Geneseo has been named the 2013 GIFT Community Caring Award winner.
The award was established to recognize individuals in the community who have "gone above and beyond." Recipients are role models who exemplify an extraordinary commitment to public service and social responsibility.
Zum Mallen, who serves as the Geneseo Public Library District board president, was nominated for the award by library director Claire Crawford.
"He has worked for years on building the new library. As a former Geneseo Middle School principal, he had already mastered the art of a building project," wrote Crawford in her nomination.
"The library was estimated to cost $4 million. We finished the project at $2.6 million," said Crawford. "As a library user and instructor, Gary has always valued the public library.
'We have enjoyed his enthusiasm and dedication in achieving a dream that will last for many years to come," she said.
"Gary has been influential in this community through his involvement in the school district as middle school principal. He spearheaded the change to the middle school concept and also was a guiding force in the passage of the referendum that built the new middle school," said GIFT board member and fellow school administrator Tom Domino
As the GIFT Community Caring Award winner, a $500 donation was made in Zum Mallen's name to the Geneseo Public Library. Lohman Companies Insurance Foundation fund with GIFT made the donation.
