  • Patriotic volunteers Bob and Judy DeBoever of Geneseo were named Community Service Award winners by the Geneseo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The DeBoevers were honored during a DAR meeting at the Geneseo Historical Museum on April 4.
"The purpose of the Community Service Award is to recognize worth individuals for unpaid voluntary achievements in cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic, historical, citizenship or environmental conservation endeavors," said Geneseo DAR chairman Cheryl Chamberlain.
The DeBoevers are co-presidents of Geneseo's Aisle of Flags organization and have been instrumental in the construction of a new storage building for the flags.
Bob and other VFW members present programs on the American flag for students in the Geneseo School District. Bob also is in charge of all military funerals in Geneseo. He organizes veterans for the funeral honor and color guard and presents an American flag to the deceased veteran's family.
The couple serve as co-presidents of the Memorial Day Association in Geneseo, organizing speakers and the program events for the annual celebration. The DeBoevers also help place flags on more than 1,100 veterans graves in Geneseo.
The DeBoevers are members of First Lutheran Church in Geneseo and are active in church events.
They helped organize and serve a Veteran's Day brunch at their church. They also spearheaded efforts to establish a veteran's flagpole and memorial garden at the church.
The couple also help organize funeral luncheons at First Lutheran and have helped with the church's Christmas Day dinner.
Judy prepares meals for church members going through cancer treatments and invites cancer survivors to her home for a special meal when their treatments are finished.
The DeBoevers were presented with the Community Service Award by Candace Fryburger, Daughters of the American Revolution Illinois State Regent.
