Michael J. Hoogerwerf, 59, of Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Atkinson, died unexpectedly Sunday, May 5, 2013, Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa. A memorial service celebrating Michael’s life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10 at Vandemore Funeral Homes, Geneseo. The Rev. Gerald Aloran will officiate. Per his request, cremation rites will be accorded. Inurnment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo, where military honors will be accorded by Geneseo VFW Post No. 5083. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service (10 a.m. to 11 a.m.) at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to the Geneseo Humane Society.
He was born on Feb. 16, 1954, in Geneseo, the son of Alvin and Barbara (Lempke) Hoogerwerf. He was a 1972 graduate of Atkinson High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy Seabees. He married Rebecca Robinder and later Anna Parr. Michael worked at the John Deere Des Moines Works as an equipment operator for 32 years, retiring in 2012. He enjoyed fishing and all animals, especially his cat.
Survivors include daughter, Dawn Gooch of Des Moines; son, Aric (Dru) Hoogerwerf of Nevada, Iowa; two grandchildren, Skylar and Sidney Hoogerwerf; his mother, Barbara Hoogerwerf of Atkinson; one sister, JoAnn Borkgren of Silvis; one brother, Rob (Pam) Hoogerwerf of Geneseo; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin; and a brother, Paul Hoogerwerf.
