According to a release sent by the Illinois State Police, on May 16 at approximately 5:55 a.m. a semi-truck tanker combination was traveling west on Interstate 80 west bound in the vicinity of Mile Marker 29.
According to witnesses the semi-truck was traveling in the left lane, crossed to the right lane, continued through the right shoulder and rolled in the North ditch.
The driver was transported from the scene with non-life threatening injuries to Hammond Henry Hospital. A small chemical spill occurred from the tanker. Hazardous Material Teams have responded to the scene for clean-up. There is no immediate public health risk due to the spill.
I-80 is currently shut down between Atkinson and Annawan. All traffic is being diverted to US 6. It is strongly recommended for local traffic to find alternate routes.
Delays are expected for the foreseeable future. The shut-down of Interstate 80 is anticipated to continue through most of today.
