Emily Ford has been named valedictorian of the Geneseo High School Class of 2013. Classmate Sean Miller is the salutatorian.
Ford is the daughter of Doug and Tracy Ford of Geneseo. Miller is the son of Paul and Laurie Miller of Geneseo.
Both will address the 208 members of the Class of 2013 at graduation on May 26.
Speeches also will be given by class president Daulton Johnson and student council president Rachel Ganson.
Members of the Class of 2013 have set high academic standards at Geneseo High School said principal Mike Haugse.
"This has been one of our strongest academic classes. They've done very well on the Prairie State and ACT exams," he said.
"They've set the bar very high. A number of students earned 30s on their ACT and we had a record number of AP tests taken this year," he said.
The principal added, "They've been academically competitive in a positive way. They're always pushing each other to get better and go as far as they can.
"It's created a great culture and climate at GHS. They've shown the underclassmen 'This is how we do it. You're suppose to get together and review for tests; you're suppose to get together and do ACT prep,'" he said.
Haugse described the Class of 2013 as "very tight."
"They've really gotten along well. They support each other. I'll never forget this year's senior night for girls' soccer. The weather was terrible, but there where kids huddled under blankets wanting to be there to support their classmates," he said.
The senior class helped make the 2012-13 school year "amazing" noted Haugse.
"We had a record number of participants in the All-State band and choir, which is a testament to our fine arts department. We also placed second in the state wrestling tournament and had a number of students advance to state tournaments individually and with teams," he explained.
"Sterling's been in possession of the conference's All-Sports Trophy for the past two years, but it appears we'll be taking that back this year as well," he said.
Members of the Class of 2013 selected green and black as their class colors. The class flower is the venus fly trap and the class song is the theme song from the movie "Space Jam" by the Quad City DJ's.
The class motto is, "Our lives are before us, the past is behind us, but memories are forever with us."
Class officers include: Daulton Johnson, president; Sean Miller, vice president; Tyler Ford, secretary; and Ryan Zum Mallen, treasurer.
Geneseo's graduation ceremony will be at 2 p.m. May 26 on the high school football field, weather permitting. In case of rain, the ceremony will be moved indoors. Gates will open at 1 p.m.
