Harold M. Gustafson, 90, of Annawan, died Monday, May 27, 2013, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 1 at Annawan Community United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dan Wright will officiate. Burial will follow at Hooppole Cemetery with military honors by the Hooppole American Legion. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, May 31 at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson. Memorials may be left to Howe’s Park, Annawan.
He was born on July 2, 1922, in Kewanee, the son of Emil and Selma (Johnson) Gustafson. He married Donna J. Nicholson on Oct. 10, 1948, in Kewanee. She died in 2011. He proudly served his country as Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He first farmed in rural Hooppole and later worked at the Kewanee Boiler for more than 25 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a member of the Annawan Community United Methodist Church as well as the Hooppole American Legion. He was a tax assessor for 20 years in Yorktown Township. He was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed his garden.
Survivors include two sons, James (Mary Clair) Gustafson of Atkinson and William “Boo” (Robin) Gustafson of Annawan; two daughters, Debra Gustafson of Annawan and Dawn (David) Croegaert of Ogden; one brother, Marvin Gustafson of Galva; one sister, Edith Polson of Prophetstown; three grandchildren, Heather Gustafson, Tony Gustafson and Amy (Mark) Phillips; five great grandchildren, Jamie Gustafson, Cody Phillips, Cameron Phillips, Castin Gustafson and Connor Gustafson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna; two sisters; three brothers; and one daughter, Pamela.
