  • Legendary sci-fi writer Richard Matheson, best known for I Am Legend and The Shrinking Man, died Sunday at the age of 87, the publisher Tor/Forge reports.Matheson's daughter Ali Marie first announced the news on Facebook, writing: "My beloved father passed away yesterday at home surrounded by the people and things he loved...he was funny, brilliant, loving, generous, kind, creative, and the most wonderful father ever...I miss you and love you forever Pop and I know you are now happy and healthy in a beautiful place full of love and joy you always knew was there..."Remember other stars we've lost this yearThough he might not be a household name, Matheson's writing had a huge impact on pop culture. What Dreams May Come, The Box, Stir of Echoes and Real Steel were all based on Matheson's writing, as was Night of the Living Dead, a direct homage to I Am Legend. Matheson also wrote several scripts himself, including The Twilight Zone's infamous William Shatner episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" and Star Trek's "The Enemy Within."Over the course of his career, Matheson received a World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, a Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement and was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2010.He is survived by his wife Ruth and four children.
