Roy R. “Ozzie” Hamer, 84, of Moline, died Friday, June 21, 2013, at Unity/Trinity in Rock Island. Memorial service celebrating his life were held Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Vandemore Funeral Home Ltd., Atkinson. The Rev. Steve Clark officiated. Per his request, cremation rites have been accorded. Private inurnment will be at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Atkinson. A visitation was held Tuesday, June 25 at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to the Roy R. “Ozzie” Hamer Memorial Fund.
Ozzie was born on July 1, 1928, in Moline, the son of William and Julia (Nowers) Hamer. He graduated from Atkinson High School in 1946. He married Joan R. DeDecker on Oct. 27, 1949, in Atkinson. Ozzie proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy. Ozzie was a plumber working at Neumann Plumbing and Heating Company in Moline for 35 years and retiring in 1990.
Ozzie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline. He also was a member of the Ex Servicemens Club and Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local No. 25. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, caning chairs and working puzzles. He also enjoyed following his grandchildren’s events and was an avid Cubs fan.
Survivors include his wife, Joan “Sug”; one son, Steve (Tina) Hamer of LeClaire, Iowa; three daughters, Cindy (J.R.) Brittenham of Yorkville, Karen (Wayne) Miles of Coal Valley and Kim (Bill) Gordon of Coal Valley; six grandchildren, Kelly Miles, Mat Wismer, Mikel Wismer, Ryan Hamer, Grayce Gordon and Megan Hamer; one brother, Jim (Edley) Hamer of Atkinson; and one sister, Janet Gustafson of Atkinson. He was preceded in death by his son, David; brothers, Bill and Walt Hamer and a sister, Wilma Seyller.
