  • The local area will be well represented at this year’s Hershey Track and Field State Meet June 29 in Buffalo Grove.
Several athletes, including children from Geneseo, advanced to the state meet from the local Hershey Track and Field Meet held June 1 in Geneseo. The Top 2 finishers in each event in age groups 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 qualify for the state level.
“(Hershey Track and Field) is an opportunity to be active and also teach them the fundamentals of track and field,” said coach Kelley Timmerman. “It teaches them sprints and middle distance which is good to get use to how to start and run through the finish line.
“I think the Hershey Track and Field event is good to initiate the process and what else is out there and also it helps them cross over into other sports. It shows them running can be fun.”
Area girls heading to the state meet include: Taylor Krueger, 9-10 division long jump, 50-meter dash and 400-m dash; and Abigail Barickman, 9-10 division long jump, 400-m dash and 4x100-m relay.
Elizabeth Mathe advanced in the 11-12 division long jump; Jenavieve Neal, 11-12 division long jump; Rebekah Beard, 13-14 division long jump, 200-m dash and 4x100-m relay; and Corrie Scobee, 13-14 division long jump.
Madeline Barickman heads to state in the 9-10 division softball throw, 100-m dash, 200-m dash and the 4x100-m relay; Esther Brown, 9-10 division softball throw, 200-m dash and 4x100-m relay; Tori Verbeck, 11-12 division softball throw, 200-m dash and 400-m dash; and Keeli Frerichs, softball throw, 100-m dash and 400-m dash.
“I am looking forward to going to Buffalo Grove and am both excited and nervous,” said Frerichs, who is competing at the state meet for the first time.
Brinley Rodgers advanced in the 11-12 division 800-m run; Amaris Olivia-Vandewalle, 11-12 division 800-m run; Victoria Gray, 9-10 division 50-m dash; Megan Soria, 9-10 division 100-m dash and 4x100-m relay; and Taelor Davis, 11-12 division 100-m dash and 200-m dash.
“I am looking forward to having fun, meeting new people and winning,” said Davis, who is competing at the state meet for the first time. “I am both nervous and excited, and am looking forward to the softball throw.”
McKenzie Davison heads to state in the 13-14 division 100-m dash and 4x100-m relay; Reece Bodeen, 13-14 division 200-m dash and 4x100-m relay; and Hannah Soria, 13-14 division 4x100-m relay.

Area athletes will be in action at 10:45 a.m. June 29 at the state meet in Buffalo Grove for a chance to move on to the national meet in Hershey, Pa.
“This is a good experience for the kids, but there are some nerves because they are not on their normal track and the atmosphere is different than at the local meet,” said Timmerman. “It will be fun and neat to see them compete.”
