Geneseo’s Michael Converse has turned an enjoyment of running into a way to help people, and is now combining it with his everyday life at his job.
Converse, a 2004 J.D. Darnall High School graduate, has joined the Live Uncommon race team to help raise money for charities and local community services through competing in charity races.
“I just started running races about a year ago and when I was running, I noticed runners wearing Live Uncommon shirts, so I thought I would check it out,” said Converse. “I realized it was about a lot more than running. I sent an e-mail to the founder and got started.”
Live Uncommon is a charity organization about empowering individuals to live up to their potential, said Converse, who said he wanted to get involved in fund-raising for a charity and Live Uncommon pointed him in the right direction.
The way the Live Uncommon helps raise money for charity is through competing in races in the Live Uncommon race series.
“Through running in these events we help raise money for the charity, and all the individuals on the team have their own charity they raise money for,” said Converse, whose charity is the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Converse chose the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention because he believes it is a good cause and he wanted to help raise money for the organization.
“I don’t have any event in my life that led me to this organization,” he said. “I identify with the cause and think it is a heart wrenching thing and I want to do what I can to help take away the heartbreak.”
Aside from racing for charities, Converse, a delivery driver for Pizza Hut, has decided to donate 10 percent of his tips toward the charity.
“I have always been touched by the generosity of the people of Geneseo, and through doing this I thought it would be a good way to give back,” said Converse. “When it comes down to fund-raising I wouldn’t ask people to donate to a cause that I wouldn’t myself.”
Converse has set a goal of $1,000 to reach this year and currently, after only a month and a half, has raised $425 through tips and donations.
“It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” said Converse. “It is not just that I love running, but I love to go out and meet people. Being involved with Live Uncommon has been great. I always wanted to do this and help out others. It has been one of the better feelings I had in my life, and Live Uncommon helped me go for it.”
