I flung seed the parrot didn’t eat just to see what would happen. What happened was a trio of sunflower stalks, the tallest at least four feet high. That was before the storm hit.

One burst of wind and the sunflower snapped off at the base, the sound of it loud enough to be heard it from the porch.

Gone was my reward for flinging seed the parrot had overlooked.

The dog barked his disapproval when the chairs slid across the porch and banged against the railing. The TV weatherman said a front was moving in, bringing with it cooler weather. He said more storms were likely to be here by the weekend.

It is storm season again, thunderhead weather.

Mt. Everest is on the other side of the world, yet we can look up almost any afternoon and see our own Himalayas.
