The other day I overheard a friend tell somebody, “I’m a Free Cheese Democrat and….” (He followed that with a remark omitted here.)

I was taken aback, not because I’m against free cheese, and certainly not because I’m adverse to Democrats, it’s just that the expression was one I had never heard before. It was all I could do not to yell out, “Well, I’m a Free Cheese Democrat who has read too eclectically to be sure of anything except that I’m a Free Cheese Democrat. I work myself into a dither doing tasks that don’t matter, and tasks that do count I put on hold. I’m aging so fast I can hardly stand it, but I do stand it for the simple reason of having no control over the mirror’s heartlessness. For the most part I’m tolerably happy, except for those times when I’m not.”

All that, mind you, from overhearing a friend tell somebody he was a Free Cheese Democrat; either that, or I misheard him entirely and am making this up as I go.

One thing for certain, listening to friends, casual acquaintances, or out and out strangers, can open doors one doesn’t even know are there.
