Geneseo High School cheerleaders have been invited to perform at the Sugar Bowl, and they need help from the community in order to make that dream trip become a reality.
If sufficient funds are raised, the GHS squad will take part in the 80th anniversary halftime show at the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2, 2014, at the Superdome, home of the New Orleans Saints football team.
Cheerleading head coach Karman Bodeen said, "Only 15 cheer squads from around the country have been invited to the Sugar Bowl, and it really is an accomplishment for our squad. We have 30 girls on the squad and all are invited.
"Not only will our cheerleaders have a magical and memorable experience as part of the Sugar Bowl halftime show, they also will benefit from working with the best dance and cheer choreographers in the industry," Bodeen said.
The cost of the trip for each cheerleader is approximately $1,079 and does not include extra money for travel, said Bodeen.
"I think it is most important that people understand the cheerleaders pay more than $600-a-year out of pocket just to cheer, and this $1,079 trip is on top of what they already pay."
The $600 is not a participation fee, but covers camp fees, equipment, clothing and uniform costs as well as many extras.
A trivia night on Aug. 17 has been planned as a group fund-raiser and the cheerleaders also are selling Geneseo blankets to help pay for the trip.
Bodeen said, "We have, on the recommendation of the company we are going through, sent letters to area businesses asking if they are interested in donating or sponsoring a cheerleader for the trip."
Donations for the trip may be made to GHS Cheer Boosters and sent to Bodeen at: 101 S. Ward St., Geneseo, IL 61254.
