Robert B. VanVooren, 87, of Durant, Iowa, formerly of Atkinson, died peacefully on Monday, July 15, 2013, at his residence in Durant. A funeral Mass celebrating his life were held Thursday, July 18 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Atkinson. The Rev. S. Stephen Engelbrecht officiated. Burial was in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Atkinson. A visitation was held Thursday, July 18 at the Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson. Memorials may be left to the Durant Fire Department or Ambulance Service.
Robert was born on Aug. 17, 1925, in Atkinson, the son of Edward “Brady” and Mary (VanDeRostyne) VanVooren. He graduated from Geneseo High School in 1943. Robert married Shirley M. Carton on Nov. 24, 1951, in Atkinson. He farmed for 22 years in rural Cornwall Township, Atkinson and then later was employed as a sales associate for Cargill Inc. in West Branch, Iowa, for 16 years, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of Our Lady Victory Catholic Church, Davenport, Iowa. He served three terms on the Iowa State Barber Board, two terms as mayor of Durant, and also served on the city council in Durant. He also was a former supervisor for Cornwall Township. He enjoyed playing cards, reading, traveling, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; one son, Craig (Julie) VanVooren of Moline; three daughters, Vicki (Gary) Neumann of Durant, Noreen (Russ) Price of Durant and Sherry (Rob) Turkal of Rapids City; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Doris Hartman.
