Richard Walter Sommers, 88, of Prophetstown, died on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at his home. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 25 at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Prophetstown. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown. A visitation was held Wednesday, July 24 at Bosma-Gibson Funeral, Prophetstown. Memorials may be made to Prophetstown Historical Society, Prophetstown American Legion Post No. 522, Prophetstown Main Street Organization and Prophetstown High School Athletic Scholarship.
Survivors include his wife, Marge; three daughters, Kim (Greg) Schmitt of Prophetstown, Kate (Tony) Cody of Prophetstown and Karyn (Trent) Buck of Prophetstown; one daughter-in-law, Margie Sommers of Prophetstown; three sons, Kurt (Carolyn) Sommers of San Diego, Calf., Kerry (Kathy) Sommers of Coal Valley and Kraig (Jessie) Sommers of Freeport; 13 grandchildren, Jon (Erin), Kiley, Tessa, Maggie (Adam), Brady (Melissa), Taylor, Allie, Morgan, Marquise, Allisa, Emma, Kory and Kennedy; three step grandchildren, Erica (Jeremy), Matt and Alex; three great grandchildren, Mykinzie, Dakota, Benjamin and one on the way; one sister, Diane (Robert) Roman of Prophetstown; three sisters-in-law, Shirley McKenna of Prophetstown, Marilyn (Bernard) Null of Erie and Eileen Detra of Prophetstown; two brothers-in-law, Dennis (Maureen) Schehl of Sykesville, Md. and Bill (Judy) Schehl of Cambridge; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Kris W. Sommers; one granddaughter, Nikole Sommers; and three brothers-in-law, Ron Holtz, Robert McKenna and Neil Detra.
