Geneseo’s 14U baseball team claimed the Babe Ruth 14U Illinois State Tournament title over the weekend in Geneseo.
Geneseo opened with a 10-0 shut out of LaGrange July 18.
Keaton Rice led the squad with three doubles and an RBI; while Braden Ries shut down LaGrange on the mound as he allowed only one hit and no runs in three innings.
In Geneseo’s next game on July 19, the squad trounced Hegewisch, 20-1.
Jordan Anderson received the Player of the Game honors for Geneseo as he came up with two doubles and four RBIs. Conner LeGrand pitched the win as he allowed only two hits, no runs and struck out six.
Geneseo advanced to square off against Galesburg in the third round July 20 (the only two teams without a loss). Geneseo came away with the 6-1 victory.
Ries went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and three RBIs; while Marshall Rice allowed only one run and had six strikeouts in a complete-game performance.
On July 21, Galesburg defeated Homewood, 15-6 to advance to the championship game against Geneseo.
In the championship contest, Galesburg jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Geneseo countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame for the 3-2 lead.
Geneseo and Galesburg battled through the second inning as Galesburg took the lead back with three runs in the top, but Geneseo responded with four in the bottom of the frame for a 7-5 advantage.
Ries shut Galesburg down when he entered the game in the third and he only allowed one run for the rest of the contest.
Geneseo plated five more runs over the next four innings to capture the 12-6 win. Keaton Rice paced the offensive effort as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a triple, one walk and drove in three runs.
Geneseo advances to the Babe Ruth 14U Ohio Valley Regional July 24-28.
