Herbert G. “Herb” Ufheil, 84, of Annawan, died surrounded by his loving family on Friday, July 26, 2013, at his home as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in June in Bettendorf, Iowa. A funeral service celebrating his life was held Wednesday, July 31 at Vandemore Funeral Home Ltd., Atkinson, where military honors were accorded by Annawan VFW Post No. 7176. A visitation was held Tuesday, July 30 at the funeral home in Atkinson. Memorials may be made to Abilities Plus or Annawan/Alba Fire Department. Per his request, cremation rites were accorded following the services and a private inurnment will be held in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Annawan.
Herb was born on Aug. 4, 1928, in Annawan, the son of William and Mary (Ioerger) Ufheil. He graduated from Annawan High School in 1946. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He married JoAnne M. Kaine on Oct. 15, 1955, in Kewanee. She died on June 9, 2012. He worked in the family business, William Ufheil & Sons Corn Shelling & Trucking for more than 50 years. He, along with the Ufheil family, owned and operated the former Sauk Trail Inn in Annawan for many years. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk in Rock Island and Moline from which he retired.
Herb was a member of the Annawan VFW Post No. 7176 and had been a former member of the Annawan/Alba Fire Department for many years. He also was a former board member of Abilities Plus, Kewanee. Herbert loved family time at the pool and family get togethers. He loved reading history books, Chicago sporting teams and enjoyed car shopping. He also was an accomplished popcorn maker.
Survivors include two sons, Eric (Lorraine) Ufheil of Annawan and Edward (Kristy) Ufheil of Crystal Lake; four daughters, Michelle Ufheil of Annawan, Marisa (Jim) Gibbons of Tampa, Fla., LoriAnne (Doug) Patton of Goodells, Mich., and Megan (Matt) Kintzger of Bettendorf; 12 grandchildren, Seth, Erin, Kristen, Isabelle, Elena, Amanda, Erica, Liam, Brittany, Stephanie, Cassandra and Ava; two great grandchildren, Hayden and Hudson; one brother, Willis “Willie” Ufheil of Annawan; three sisters, Dolores Bridges of Annawan, Marilyn “Mick” Nowers of Bloomington and Sharon Humphrey of Galva. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, JoAnne; son, Kurt; daughter, Erin Lynette; brothers, Ken and Cal Ufheil and sister, Ruth Peart.
