Tom and Margaret Hitzhusen of Geneseo were named the 2013 Conservation Farm Family of the Year and presented with the Governor's Award during the annual Association of Illinois Soil and Water Conservation District's 65th annual meeting in Springfield.

Tom and Margaret Hitzhusen of Geneseo were named the 2013 Conservation Farm Family of the Year and presented with the Governor's Award during the annual Association of Illinois Soil and Water Conservation District's 65th annual meeting in Springfield.

The award, sponsored by AISWCD, Brownfield Network, Prairie Farmer and the Illinois Department of Agriculture recognizes "an outstanding conservation farm family that exemplifies total resource management."

There are 97 Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Illinois, comprising of 16 Land Use Councils.

After advancing as the winner from their local Land Use Council, the Hitzhusens and their farm competed against remaining Land Use Councils in Springfield.

In addition to a plaque, the Hitzhusens received a $500 check from Meijer and a Memorex station audio CD from the Brownfield Network.

The couple also will be honored on Aug. 13 at the Illinois State Fair as part of the fair's "Ag Day" program. They will be presented with a personalized "Conservation Farm Family" sign for their farm.
