  • Elma M. Rakestraw, 95, of Annawan, died Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Hammond-Henry Hospital Emergency Room, Geneseo. A funeral Mass celebrating her life was held Sunday, Aug. 4 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Annawan. The Rev. Mark Miller officiated. Burial was in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Atkinson. A visitation was held one hour prior to Mass at the church. Memorials may be made to the Annawan/Alba Rescue and Fire Department. Vandemore Funeral Home Ltd., Atkinson assisted the family with arrangements.
    She was born on March 18, 1918, in Kewanee, the daughter of Edward and Hortence (Dumolyn) Mariman. She married Horace E. “Jigs” Rakestraw in May 1935 in Annawan. He died in 1977. She worked at the Annawan High School Cafeteria. She was a receptionist/cashier at the Farmers Table, Annawan.
    She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Annawan and the Altar & Rosary Society. She belonged to the VFW Auxiliary as well as the American Legion Auxiliary. Elma loved spending time with all her grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing cards, sewing, knitting, jigsaw puzzles and reading. She was an avid Cubs fan.
    Survivors include her daughter, Roberta (Larry) Wetzel of Prophetstown; 10 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and 21 great-great grandchildren (with two more on the way). She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Horace; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Russell and Delores Rakestraw and Roger Rakestraw; one granddaughter, Roxanne Heath; and five sisters
