  • The 9-year-old granddaughter of a former veterinarian who was dedicated to the Livingston County Humane Society carried out some of his good will with a special fundraiser today.
Kyleigh McBride of Lexington, granddaughter of the late Dr. D.W. Schleder, organized an art show and fundraiser at the LCHS shelter today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring artwork by her grandmother, Joyce Schleder, as well as herself.
Schleder said that her granddaughter came to her with the idea of doing a fundraiser in memory of her grandpa and that initially got the ball rolling.
“They were pretty close. She wanted to do something that was similar to do with what he had been doing,” Schleder stated. “She has done all of the work herself. I’ve made the contacts and taken her where she needs to be and told her that the rest was up to her.”
The art show included drawings from both Schleder and McBride, and crocheted dishcloths. Those items could be purchased by giving a donation.
“We have had a lot of the veterinarians that my husband worked with give very nice and very generous gift certificates or baskets. Kyleigh and I have done up several baskets, including a crochet basket and a photo of an old barn near Odell was donated,” Schleder said.
Other items available included a Mickey Mouse watch and several other gift baskets, including ones for felines and canines, coffee lovers and fans of scrapbooking.
Dr. Schleder, who passed away in 2010, served on the board and was instrumental in starting the LCHS, worked in Chenoa and Pontiac, and volunteered many hours to the care of animals. His granddaughter said she is interested in continuing that legacy in her future.
“We don’t have a goal for the fundraiser,” McBride stated. “I want the humane society to use this money however they’d like.”
