  • Rhoda L. Claeys, 90, of Atkinson, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo. A funeral Mass celebrating her life was held Wednesday, Aug. 14 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Atkinson. The Rev. S. Stephen Engelbrecht officiated. Burial was in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Atkinson. A visitation was held Tuesday, Aug. 13 at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson, where a rosary was recited. Memorials may be left to St. Anthony’s Church or the Atkinson Rescue Squad.
    She was born on Dec. 16, 1922, in Atkinson, the daughter of Peter and Lucy (VerKruyse) Eeckhout. She was a graduate of Atkinson High School. She married Elmer C. Claeys on Aug. 12, 1943, in Atkinson. He died in 2009. Rhoda farmed along with her husband, Elmer for 35 years in Cornwall Township, retiring to town in 1979.
    Rhoda belonged to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church. She was a member of the Atkinson American Legion Auxiliary, the Geneseo V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Women of the Moose, Geneseo Chapter. She bowled in women’s leagues in Geneseo and Kewanee for more than 50 years and was an avid Cubs fan. She enjoyed traveling extensively and spending time with her family.
    Survivors include one daughter, Gay (Larry) Hines of Geneseo; one son, Gary (Yolanda) Claeys of Morrison; six grandchildren, Amy (Todd) Cochran, Sarah (Matt) Mumm, Stephanie (Mike) Sweitzer, Christie Carter, Adam (Vickie) Hines and Wendy Malone; 13 great grandchildren; and one sister, Rosella Vandersnick of Atkinson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Elmer.
