Arden W. Hoogerwerf, 95, of Atkinson, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo. A funeral Mass celebrating his life will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Atkinson. The Rev. S. Stephen Englebrecht will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Atkinson. A visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18 at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. prior to the visitation. Memorials may be made to Atkinson Fire and Rescue or Hillcrest Home, Geneseo.
He was born on July 29, 1918, in Geneseo, the son of Fred and Deda (Cryer) Hoogerwerf. He married Norberta A. Schaefer on Nov. 30, 1940, in Atkinson. She died in 1991. Arden farmed in rural Atkinson (Cornwall Township) from 1940 to 1970. And then he later worked at Eagles Warehouse from 1970 to 1980, retiring in 1980. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed flower gardening, his coffee group and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy (Chuck) Kibler of Geneseo and Ardith (Bobby) Burton of Atkinson; grandchildren, Sheila Stetter and friend Mike Belovics of Geneseo, Shelley (Scott) Stetter of Geneseo, Jeff (Kerri) Kibler of Geneseo, Jason (Nicole) Burton of Atkinson and Nick (Megan) Foster of Mississippi; great grandchildren, Daniel Stetter, Norissa Stetter, Emily (Michael) DeDecker, Katie Kibler, Sara Kibler, Kolton Schmoll, Avery Burton, Mitchell Foster and Haddie Foster; and great-great grandchild, Peter DeDecker. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norberta and son, Richard Arden Hoogerwerf.
