  • Eugene F. “Gene” Schehl, 86, of Atkinson, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at Hammond-Henry Hospital Long Term Care, Geneseo. A funeral service celebrating his life was held Monday, Aug. 12 at Atkinson Congregational Church. The Rev. Mike McBride officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. A visitation was held Sunday, Aug. 11 at Vandemore Funeral Homes, Atkinson. Memorials may be made to Eugene Schehl Memorial Fund.
    Gene was born on Dec. 19, 1926, in Prophetstown, the son of Fred and Alma (Hoogerwerf) Schehl. He graduated from Atkinson High School in 1944. He married L. Laureen Hamilton on May 28, 1949, in Geneseo. She died in 2010. Gene worked for Farm Service Co. in Atkinson as branch manager for several years and then later he worked at Wyffels Hybrids in Atkinson in quality control division.
    He served as Mayor of Atkinson from 1965 to 1973 and is a former member and past president of the Atkinson Kiwanis Club, having served as president during the club’s third year of existence. He was a former member of Full Gospel Businessman and Henry County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and vegetable gardening.
    Survivors include his son, Steve (Norma) Schehl of Carmel, Ind.; four grandchildren, Amy (Todd) Cochran of Waukesha, Wis.; Sarah (Matt) Mumm of Sugar Grove; Elyse (James) Rich of Tokyo, Japan; and Tyler (Joan) Schehl of Chicago; four great grandchildren, Emilie, Cole, Aden and Matilyn; and two sisters, Phyllis Bass of Cornelius, Ore., and Marie Allen of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laureen and daughter, Jan Claeys.
