  • Lloyd Bennett Jr., 89, of Geneseo, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at the Genesis Medical Center Illini Campus, Silvis, surrounded by his loving family. Lloyd was a deeply faithful Christian man and exemplified his faith in his daily life. Funeral services celebrating his life were held Wednesday, Aug. 21 at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. The Rev. Bruce Bergthold officiated. Burial was in Floral Hill Cemetery, Neponset. Military honors were accorded by the Kewanee Veterans’ Council. A visitation was held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to the Lloyd Bennett Jr. Memorial Fund.
    He was born on May 25, 1924, in Kewanee, the son of Lloyd and Leola (Greer) Bennett Sr. He was a graduate of Neponset High School. He married Marian A. Sorenson on Dec. 7, 1946, in Chicago. Lloyd served his country proudly with the United States Army from 1944-1945. Farming was his passion and Lloyd farmed for 40 years in the Sheffield area. Lloyd was a member of First Congregational Church, Geneseo. He loved the outdoors and was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. In his retirement years, Lloyd enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his family.
    Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Marian; children, Sharon (Robert) Strupp of Rock Island, Timothy (Vicky) Bennett of Lincoln, Carla (Randal) Mayes of Stevens Point, Wis., and Brian Bennett of Geneseo; six grandchildren, Andrew Strupp, Darcie Strupp, Joseph Mayes, Carolyn (Aaron) Jensen, Lisa (Darrin) White and Sara (Rod Purdue) Thompson; three great grandchildren, Olivia, Brittney and Aiden; brother, James (Marlene) Bennett; two sisters, Margaret Wall and Virginia Moore; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Warren and Clarence Bennett and great granddaughter, Grace.
    The family would like to extend a warm thank you to all the staff at Illini Hospital who assisted with the care of their husband and father.
