  • The Geneseo girls’ golf team kicked off the season this past week as the squad earned three wins and first-place finish in tournament play.
    Geneseo vs. Moline
Geneseo chalked up its third win of the season with a 186-196 victory over visiting Moline Aug. 27 in the Lady Leafs’ home opener at the Geneseo Country Club.
“I am exceptionally pleased with how the ladies performed in their first tournament and meets,” said head coach Steve Brucher. “The thing that stands out the most is we had different people each night having solid rounds. A different girl puts together a solid round and when you combine that with the others being consistent that is what makes for success on the golf course. To me, that has been the best thing so far. When we can have someone have a good round in addition to Monica and Ashley scoring well every time, that bodes well for us.”
Monica Lieving was the top scorer for Geneseo as she shot a 43 on the par 35 course.
Ashley Farrell followed one stroke behind with a 44; while Abby Wilebski carded a 48. Bailey Ries shot a 51 for the day; followed by Emily VandeWiele with a 52 and Abby Frank recorded a 60.
Competing for the junior varsity were Emma Vandemore, 48; Amber Dauksas, 49; Sierra Sommer, 58; Lilly Henderson, 64; Corey Panicucci, 65; and Taylor McKean, 66.
    Geneseo vs. Princeton/Rockridge
On Aug. 26, the Lady Leaf golfers nabbed a first-place finish in their triangular with Rockridge and Princeton on the road. Geneseo shot a 185, followed by Rockridge with a 201 and Princeton a 217.
Lieving was the medalist for the match as she shot a 43 for the par 36 course.
Ries chipped in a 45; while VandeWiele carded a 46. Farrell finished the day with a 51; followed by Wilebski with a 53 and Frank a 56.
    Geneseo at Rock Falls Invite
The Lady Leaf golf team opened the 2013 campaign in fine fashion as the girls claimed the team title in the small school division at the Rock Falls Invite Aug. 24 with score of 374.
“I think the experience, without a question, helped us at Rock Falls,” said Brucher. “The girls shot a 374 as a team on Saturday, and last year in regionals with the same girls and same course, the girls shot a 407. They were 33 strokes better on Saturday.”
VandeWiele paced the squad as she carded an 87 to take second place overall.
Lieving was one stroke behind VandeWiele with an 88 to take fourth place; while Farrell shot a 95.
Ries recorded a 104 for the course; followed by Wilebski with a 105 and Vandemore a 117.
“Two of the goals the girls set as a team they have already met were to beat Moline and win a tournament or invitational,” said Brucher. “We are definitely off to a good start and playing with confidence.”
