Goodwill officials have opened a Donation Express in Geneseo.
An official ribbon cutting on Aug. 29 followed an early August soft-opening at the site.
Donation Express sites are not stores, instead, the location is designed as "a place people can bring donations without having to drive to the Quad Cities," said Pat Airy, CEO and president of Goodwill of the Heartland.
"We've heard a lot of good feedback from people who are glad we're here because they have items they've been looking to donate and get rid of," she said.
The donation response thus far has been "phenomenal" said Jason Toms, vice president of retail operations.
Donation Express sites are designed to "test" a market to see if enough donations could be obtained to support a regular Goodwill store, said Toms.
The concept of a Donation Express is a fairly unique one, said Airy. Goodwill of the Heartland only has two other Donation Expresses — one in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the other in DeWitt, Iowa.
Goodwill's Donation Express in Geneseo accepts "almost all items" said Toms. Items not accepted at the site include televisions, exercise equipment, lawn and garden equipment and anything with an engine.
However, he said clothing, shoes, seasonal items and household goods always are in demand.
The Geneseo Donation Express has three staff members — two part-time and one full-time — and staff members sort, process and prepare donations at the Geneseo site before shipping the items to Goodwill stores in Moline and Rock Island.
The Geneseo Donation Express is located at 1225 S. Oakwood Ave., Suite 6, in the former Movie Gallery store.
Donation Express is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
