Papa Mike's and NAPA Auto Parts in the 700 block of S. West St. were heavily damaged in an early morning fire Friday.

According to information from Olney Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched at 4:09 a.m. to a report of a structure fire at Papa Mike's, 728 S. West St.

Officers on scene reported flames were visible coming from the rear of the structure, which is at the south end of the business complex.

The fire spread through the complex, damaging Papa Mike's and NAPA. Several area fire departments were called for mutual aid, including Noble/Wakefield Fire Protection District (FPD), Claremont/Bonpas FPD, West Salem FPD, Wade FPD, Bridgeport FPD, Clay City FPD, Sumner/Christy FPD and Lawrence/Allison FPD. One firefighter was struck with a piece of metal when oil and chemicals inside the NAPA Auto Parts store exploded. The firefighter was treated at the scene and was not seriously hurt.

Fire Chief Rusty Holmes said at the scene that firefighters were also trying to keep the fire from spreading to the Rural King building.

Because of the chemical-laden water runoff from NAPA, a city crew was also building a dike near Ill. 130 to keep the water from entering the storm sewer.

Messages left with the owners of Papa Mike's and NAPA were not returned before deadline today.

The department reported at approximately 10:30 a.m. that firefighters were still at the scene. Holmes stated that the fire was under control and that there had been no further injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
