It took the Lady Leaf volleyball team three games, but the girls were able to snag their first win of the season on the road against Alleman, 25-19, 16-25 and 25-20.
“For the first game, I thought we played very well,” said head coach Khloe Beaird. “I was surprised they were just more excited than anything. They kept saying they just wanted to play, and that is how they came out playing. We had very few passing errors (for a first game).”
Kylie Gerhardt helped lead the offensive attack for Geneseo as she put away 12 kills, had two aces and eight assists on the night.
Jamie DeFauw chipped in 11 kills of her own; while Heather Hickenbottom added five kills and two aces.
Kylie Kelsall led the team in assists with nine; while Shaina Lohman had four. Jordan DePauw finished the game with one ace.
“One thing that surprised me was Shaina Lohman having four assists as our right-side hitter,” said Beaird. “When Kylie Gerhardt had to take the first pass, Shaina stepped up and did a nice job.”
Defensively, Heather Setser came up with 27 digs to pace the squad; followed by Gerhardt with 13 and Kaylie Piekos added eight.
DeFauw blocked nine of Alleman’s attempts for kills to lead the team; while Lohman added another four, and Piekos got her hands on three.
“Heater Setser, our libero, rocked it last night and did a great job passing, but that is not surprising,” said Beaird. “Jamie had nine blocks and seven of them solo, so I thought we did really well blocking. Our hitting is one thing to work on off the serve receive, executing that play and finishing that point.”
The Lady Leafs (1-0 overall) will be on the road next when they take on the Hubs at Rochelle at 5 p.m. Sept. 11.
