So my phone rings this afternoon and I find myself on the line with a phone bank volunteer for one of the candidates for the open congressional seat in my district. He informs me there is going to be a couple of primary debates this coming week and he wants to know if I would want to “do a visibility” for his candidate at any of the debate sites. The first thought that crosses my mind is that I’ve always considered my visibility or lack thereof to be an involuntary matter, something essentially beyond my control, not something I can do or not do —or even undo. But instead of sharing this I decide to inform this young man that I haven’t yet actually decided who I am supporting. I point out that I’m someone who might like to attend the debate with an open mind rather than visible support for his candidate. When and where are these debates? —I ask him and he stammers a bit, he apologizes for leaping to conclusions about my support —and I hear him rustling with some paper. Then he hangs up.
