As part of the growing lack of a clue from the Regime, the new approach to Syria is not “evidence” but “common sense.” That’s what a trial lawyer says to a jury when he has no evidence. “Evidence, Shmevidence, it’s about common sense!” The explanation from the Regime is that Syria is not a court of law, and there is no need for “beyond a reasonable doubt.” Indeed, international law, which the Regime increasingly ignores, does not require “beyond a reasonable doubt” but “actual certainty.”† By way of example, the UN needed to see the badges of Saddam Hussein’s Republican Guards on the shoulder patches of the troops in Kuwait before justification would be shown for collective international action. The notion that the United States can or should engage in unilateral aggressive war against a member state of the United Nations based on “common sense” squarely places Obama in the ranks of two recent men who used the same exact approach and philosophy–Hitler and Stalin.† Prompt impeachment of the freakoid with his feet up on the sacred desk in the Oval Office can’t happen soon enough.
