Frank A. Gripp Jr., 77, of Annawan, died peacefully surrounded by his family Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at his home. A memorial mass to celebrate his life was held Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Annawan. The Rev. Mark Miller officiated. Inurnment followed in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Annawan. A visitation was held Monday, Sept. 9 at Vandemore Funeral Homes Ltd., Atkinson where a rosary was recited. Memorials may be directed to the Frank Gripp Jr. Memorial Fund. Per his request, cremation rites have been accorded.
He was born Aug. 6, 1936, in Annawan, the son of Francis A. and Margaret (Vandersnick) Gripp Sr. He graduated from Annawan High School in 1954. He proudly served his country in the Army Reserves from 1954 to 1962. He married Sharon K. DeReu on Dec. 29, 1956, at Sacred Heart Church, Annawan. Frank had been a co-owner and driver for Gripp Trucking in Annawan for 50 years, retiring in 2013.
Frank was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Holy Name Society. In previous years, Frank had been a member of the Sacred Heart School Board, the Annawan/Alba Fire Department, and he enjoyed golfing and rolle-bolle. He had been an avid go-kart racer participating in numerous races. Frank also enjoyed spending time with his entire family.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon; one son, Guy (Brenda) Gripp of Annawan; two daughters, Gay Childs of Keller, Texas; and Gina Watters of Rock Island; eight grandchildren, Adam (Michelle) Childs, Ashley (Brian) Thomsen, Chad (Tara) Gripp, Andrew (Julie) Gripp, Garrett Gripp, Anthony Gripp, Damian Olvera, and Lindsay (Jose) Perez; 12 great grandchildren, Kendall, Reece, Tessa, Kellen and Addison and Whitney Gripp; Alexander, Anthony and Ava Olvera; Emilio, Elias and Esai Perez; one brother, Pete (Dawn) Gripp of Annawan; and one sister, Margaret Marshall of Toulon. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Marlene Miller and Mary Anne Stone.
