Margaret Mary Smith, 99, a long-time resident of Atkinson, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Good Samaritan Village, Geneseo, with her family at her bedside. A funeral Mass celebrating her life was held Tuesday, Sept. 17 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Atkinson. The Rev. S. Stephen Engelbrecht officiated. Burial was in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Atkinson. A visitation was held Monday, Sept. 16 at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson, where a rosary was recited. Memorials may be left to the Margaret Smith Memorial Fund to be distributed among the missions Margaret supported.
She was born on Dec. 6, 1913, in rural Atkinson, the daughter of Peter and Mary Louise (Lievens) VanHerzeele. She married Harvey Christian Smith on Feb. 14, 1938, in Atkinson. He died in 1961. She was a receptionist in the office of Dr. Juan Puentes in Atkinson for 17 years, but, foremost, she was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother.
She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Atkinson and the Church Altar and Rosary Society. She belonged to the Lady Foresters of Atkinson, Atkinson Women’s Club, Atkinson War Mothers and was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a former Cub Scout Den Mother and 4-H leader. She was an avid gardener and loved to share her garden produce and flowers.
Survivors include one daughter, Julianne (Arnold) Schmid of Geneseo; one son, Harvey Daniel Smith of Geneseo; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Lou DeCausemaker of Geneseo. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Maribeth Blohm; two brothers and five sisters.
