Katherine E. Benson, 97, of Geneseo, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at the Hammond-Henry Hospital Long Term Care Unit, Geneseo. A funeral service celebrating her life was held Monday, Sept. 23 at First Lutheran Church, Geneseo. The Rev. Dr. Arthur Bergren officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. A visitation was held prior to services at the church. Memorials for Katherine may be directed to First Lutheran Church or Hammond-Henry Hospital Long Term Care Unit. Vandemore Funeral Homes Ltd., Geneseo assisted the family with arrangements.
She was born on April 19, 1916, in Bishop Hill, the daughter of Carl and Irene (Ericson) Anderson. She married Bernard Benson. He died in 1988. Katherine had been employed as a sales clerk at M&W Shoes in Geneseo for many years.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Geneseo as well as the Lutheran Church Women's Circle. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and several card groups. One of her favorite pastimes was crocheting.
Survivors include her son, Robert C. (Kathie) Benson of Geneseo; three grandchildren, Dr. Jeff Benson, Julie Martin and Kris Talbot; and two great grandchildren, Marty Talbot and Travis Talbot. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; daughter, Janice Martin in 2012; brother, Franklin Anderson and sister, Evelyn Detwieler.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hammond-Henry Hospital's Long Term Care Unit for the care and compassion they showed Katherine as it was her home for more than four years.
