Sandra Kay Cahalan, 68, of Geneseo, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at her residence. A memorial Mass celebrating her life was held Tuesday, Oct. 8 at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church, Geneseo. The Rev. Michael Pakula officiated. Inurnment followed in the Rock Island National Cemetery. A visitation was held Monday, Oct. 7 at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. Per her request, cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials may be left to the Sandra Cahalan Memorial Fund.
She was born on May, 10, 1945, in Moline, the daughter of Raymond and Alberta (Deshemaker) VandeVelde. She was a 1963 graduate of Alleman High School in Rock Island. She married John M. Cahalan on July 27, 1963, in Moline. Sandra was a hostess at The Cellar Restaurant in Geneseo for 32 years, retiring in 2010 due to her health.
She was a member and past president of the Geneseo and Colona Junior Woman’s Club and belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary in Geneseo. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and Little League scorekeeper for her boys’ teams for 13 years. She enjoyed crocheting and made blankets and hats to take to the hospital for newborns for many years.
Survivors include her husband, John; three sons, Gregg (Amy) Cahalan of Grand Haven, Mich.; Todd Cahalan and Kris Bankson of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Mark (Laurie) Cahalan of DeWitt, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ron (Jeanine) VandeVelde of Lake Barrington. She was preceded in death by her parents.
