S. Susan Rubin, 78, of Geneseo, formerly of Cambridge, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at Amber Ridge Memory Care, Moline. Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 5 at Cambridge United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Christopher Ritter officiated. Burial was in Rosedale Cemetery, Cambridge. A visitation was held Friday, Oct. 4 at the Cambridge chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Cambridge Ambulance Service or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Sylvia Susan Carter was born on Feb. 11, 1935, in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of David O. and Orpha O. Welch Carter. She was educated in Cambridge schools and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1953. She attended Western Illinois University in Macomb. She married Glenn H. Nelson in September 1954. She married Charles Rubin on April 2, 1987 at St. Simons Island, Ga. Susan worked for Family Medical Associates in Cambridge from 1973 to 1981. She was one of the first E.M.T responders in Cambridge. She was a successful real estate agent in Arlington Heights from 1983 until retirement in 1995. The couple moved to Geneseo in 1996 and Susan then spent several years volunteering with the Hammond-Henry Hospital Auxiliary.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Geneseo, Oakwood Country Club and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a charter member at Valley View Club, Cambridge, and a former member of the Cambridge United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for 25 years. Golf was one of her favorite hobbies and she was a seven-time Club Champion at Valley View. She also enjoyed bowling, playing bridge, cribbage, traveling and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband, Charles; a son and daughter-in-law, Gregg and Mary Jane Nelson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheri and Eric Goff of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and Lisa and Steve VanWatermeulen of Cambridge; four step children, Steven (Beth) Rubin of Denver, Colo.; Catherine Rubin of Louisville, Ky.; Scott Rubin of Denver and Martha Lell of Denver; seven grandchildren and spouses, Jeremy (Nicole) Nelson, Lindsey Nelson, Derek Nelson, Dana (Ross) Dwyer, John Robinson, Kayla VanWatermeulen and Alex VanWatermeulen; four step grandchildren, Lindsay Rubin, Casey Rubin, Michaela Lell and Adam Lell; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
