  • Obituary: Gerald ‘Archie’ Snyder Sr.

  • Gerald A.W. “Archie” Snyder Sr., 92, of Geneseo, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at his residence. At his request, cremation rites have been accorded and there will be no visitation or services. Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo is assisting the family with arrangements.

  • Gerald A.W. “Archie” Snyder Sr., 92, of Geneseo, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at his residence. At his request, cremation rites have been accorded and there will be no visitation or services. Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo is assisting the family with arrangements.
    He was born on Dec. 21, 1920, in Putnam County, Mo., the son of Hirim and Nannie (Gadberry) Snyder. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Mary Ellen Robinson in Kansas in 1947. He worked at Alcoa as a tool and die maker and farmed in the Cordova and Atkinson area before moving to Harlingen, Texas in 1969. In 1992, he returned to Geneseo to be closer to family. He was a very handy man with skills in electricity, metal working and car repairing, with all of his extended family depending on him at one time or another. He built his first grandson a go-cart that was passed down to other grandsons.
    Survivors include his wife, Mary; daughter, Sherry McAvoy of Geneseo; son, Mike Snyder of Geneseo; two grandsons, Steve and Scott Snyder of Hannibal, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Ben McAvoy; son, Gerald A.W. Snyder Jr. and son-in-law, Mike McAvoy.
