MARION -- Pinckneyville's volleyball team went 5-0, including a win over Murphysboro in what became a championship match, to sweep the Marion Invitational round-robin tournament at Cuss Wilson Gymnasium on Saturday.
Murphysboro finished second at 4-1 after falling to Pinckneyville in the final match that was moved to the end of the day in a rearranged schedule.
The host Lady Wildcats went 3-2 but rose above the .500 mark for the first time this season as they are now 13-12 overall. Marion lost to Murphysboro (25-20, 25-16) and Pinckneyville (25-21, 27-25, 15-8) but defeated Herrin (25-17, 25-15), Du Quoin (25-16, 25-15) and NCOE (22-25, 25-20, 15-5).
"We showed improvement," said Marion coach Lauren Blumhorst. "We just looked slow and tired later in the day in our last two matches (the two losses). Right now we need a leader to emerge and keep us positive when times get tough."
Montana Schafer, who was Marion's representative on the all-tournament team, compiled 34 kills, 11 blocks and six assists in the five matches. Randi Smith added 14 kills and five blocks, Haley Rushing had seven kills and 23 digs, Lyndsee Adams had 11 kills and 12 digs, Sheyanne Stacy had 28 digs, Maddy Pool had five kills and Brianna Holmes had 50 assists with Dakotah Quertermous adding 15 assists.
Herrin went 1-4 on the day with the lone win coming in its final match against NCOE by a 25-23, 12-25, 15-6 score. Herrin lost to Murphysboro, Marion and Pinckneyville in two games and lost to Du Quoin in three (25-13, 19-25, 15-10).
