  • Pontiac had won on the Metamora Fields Golf Course before. But all the Indians were looking to do Monday was to finish in the top three at the Class 2A Metamora Sectional boys’ golf tournament.
And that’s what they did. The Tribe finished in the top three and earned its first-ever berth into the state golf tournament.
Pontiac came in with a 310 to finish second, five strokes off the pace of champion Dunlap (305) and one stroke ahead of Peoria Notre Dame (311). This earned the Indians a spot in next weekend’s Class 2A state finals tournament at D.A. Wiebring-ISU Golf Course in Normal.
“It’s been a long and enjoyable journey,” PTHS head coach Paul Ritter said Monday night. “We very much made our goal.”
The Indians had included a state trip as a team, along with winning the Corn Belt Conference championship, as goals for the season. Laden with four seniors, the Tribe was looking at making some school history, to set a standard for the program.
Pontiac did this by showing a balance among a group of seven or eight players throughout the season. The Indians showed this balance over the past few weeks culminating in a round on Monday that saw the six players separated by a mere six strokes.
Senior Trent Smith led the way with a 75, which tied him for sixth place overall. Classmate Parker Tibbs came in with a career-best 77, which would have been tied for 11th overall.
Ritter said it was the first time that Tibbs broke 80.
Rounding out the team scoring were John Leverton (Jr.) and Eric Raube (Sr.) with a 79 each. Sophomore Kyle Eggenberger also shot a 79 and senior Hagen LePard came in with an 81.
“Our kids are consistent,” Ritter said. “It tells what kind of a team this is. I really feel good about this team.”
