  • Joan M. Thies, 82, of Geneseo, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Unity Point Health- Trinity Rock Island. A funeral service celebrating her life was held Thursday, Oct. 17 at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. The Rev. Dr. Chris Ritter officiated. Burial was in North Cemetery, Geneseo. A visitation was held Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to the Joan M. Thies Memorial Fund.
    She was born on May 12, 1931, in Geneseo, the daughter of Charles and Lois (Dunbar) Kenady. She was a 1949 graduate of Geneseo High School. She married Stanley A. Thies on Oct. 8, 1949, in Geneseo. He died in 2005. She was a secretary and bookkeeper for the former DeReu Skelgas Company and then at Hammond-Henry Hospital and Northside School in Geneseo.
    She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Geneseo where she was a former Sunday School teacher. She belonged to the Women of the Moose in Geneseo and was co-founder of the Girls’ Softball League in Geneseo. She enjoyed spending time with her family, working crossword puzzles, watching Fox News and doing artistry work. She liked her flower garden, listening to music and wintering in Arizona with Stanley.
    Survivors include one daughter, Lynette (Alvin) Berg of Eldridge, Iowa and one son, Roger (Michelle) Thies of Atkinson; four grandchildren, Jason Thies (Jamie Ristau), Lyndsay (Joe) O’Brien, Kevin Berg and Heather (Michael) Dabney; four great grandchildren, Tristan and Kennady Thies and Rylan and Makayla Hughbanks; and one brother, Richard Kenady of Geneseo. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Sue Ann Thies.
