  • First and third-place finishes at the IESA Sectional Meet in Germantown Hills Oct. 12 has both the GMS boys’ and girls’ cross country teams heading to the state meet.

  • First and third-place finishes at the IESA Sectional Meet in Germantown Hills Oct. 12 has both the GMS boys’ and girls’ cross country teams heading to the state meet.
    The boys claimed top honors in their race with 4-of-the-7 runners placing in the Top 20 and three runners finishing just outside the Top 20.
    Andrew Rizzo led the team with a seventh-place finish in 11 minutes and 31.8 seconds; followed by Kaden Rink, 11th, 11:36.1; Reed Vanderheyden, 13th, 11:37.6; and Blake Duncan, 14th, 11:38.3.
    Thackery Newton took 21st in 12:08.8; while Cameron Darin finished 22nd, 12:10.3; and Nathan Carroll, 23rd, 12:10.7.
    The girls’ squad took home third-place honors with three runners in the Top 20.
    Hannah Soria was the lead runner for GMS and finished in eighth place at 12:36.2; followed by Heather Dietrich, ninth, 12:36.6; and Raelynn Versluys, 20th, 12:55.3.
    Josie Brown finished 23rd in 13:06; while Veronica Eilers took 30th, 13:22.3; Kenzie Davison, 33rd, 13:26.9; and Caitlin Gorge, 35th, 13:28.7.
    The Leafs and Lady Leafs will compete at the IESA State Meet at Maxwell Park in Normal Oct. 19. The girls will race at 11 a.m. and the boys at 11:45 a.m.
