  • Elna L. Johnson, 83, of Annawan, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at her home with her family by her side. A funeral service celebrating her life was held Monday, Oct. 21 at First Lutheran Church, Geneseo. The Rev. Dr. Arthur Bergren officiated. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. A visitation was held Sunday, Oct. 20 at Vandemore Funeral Home Ltd., Atkinson. Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church Music Program.
    She was born on Aug. 1, 1930, in Atkinson, the daughter of Berndt “Ben” and Ione (Westlund) Nordstrom. She graduated from Atkinson High School in 1947. After high school, she went to Augustana College and then went on to graduate from Western Illinois University. She married Bennie H. Johnson on March 23, 1952, at First Lutheran Church, Geneseo. He died in 2005. She was a longtime school teacher at Atkinson Grade School, teaching first grade for 24 years before retiring in 1991.
    She was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church, Geneseo. She belonged to the Annawan/Alba Women’s Club, Sams Club camping group, AFS (American Field Services), Friends of Geneseo, Henry County Retired Teachers, Eight Mile Home Extension, and her card club for more than 60 years. She was an accomplished pianist and an advocate for education. She enjoyed traveling and camping, and she loved spending time with family and friends.
    Survivors include a son, Phillip Johnson (Alex Williams) of Imperial, Pa.; six daughters, Pamela (Richard) Gottard of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; Marla Johnson (Bob Pyevich) of Annawan; Nancy (John) Clark of Staunton; Julie Clark (David Powell) of Annawan; Miriam (Mark) Howlett of Little Elm, Texas; and Linnea Johnson (Jeff Tuisl) of St. Charles; AFS son, Stefan Roth of Germany; 14 grandchildren, Chad (Bre) Clark, Heath (Ashley) Clark, Ben (Keli) Clark, Jennie Clark, Bonnie (Nick) McClelland, Hayley (Andrew) Wright, Darrin (Abby) Clark, Rosalie Clark, Alexa Johnson-Roach, Seth Howlett, Zachary Howlett, Leah Howlett, Luke Howlett and Lily Tuisl; 16 great grandchildren; sister, Marie Norlen of Moline; sisters-in-law, Greta Nordstrom of Geneseo and Mary Nordstrom of Geneseo; and brother-in-law, Forrest Johnson of Davenport, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bennie; two brothers, Ralph and Robert Nodstrom; and an infant sister, Myrtle.
