  • Geneseo senior Michelle Legatzke earned a spot at the IHSA State Tennis Finals with a fourth-place finish in the singles’ bracket at the Oct. 17-18 Rock Island Sectional.
“I think, overall, we played our best tennis,” said head coach Dan Putman. “Rori Westerlund and Jessi Daly went three sets with a Alleman team that was seeded, and Michelle qualified playing really good tennis. For the younger girls, playing at sectionals was a great learning experience.”
Legatzke won her opening round match by a score of 6-0 and 6-0 over UT’s Marlene Mendoza, and nabbed another win over Sterling Newman’s Mary-Alice Oswalt, 6-1 and 6-0. She suffered her first loss of the tournament 0-6 and 0-6 to Moline’s Olivia Ray.
In the third-place match, Legatzke fell to Alleman’s Alexandra Kerr, 2-6 and 3-6 to take fourth.
“Michelle always seems to be at her peak at sectionals,” said Putman. “She played outstanding tennis. This has been one of her most consistent years and every thing she did she executed really well.”
The doubles’ duo of Jessi Daly/Rori Westerlund went 1-1 in their bracket with an opening win over their Galesburg opponents, 6-1 and 6-1, but then fell to their Alleman opponents, 7-5, 3-6 and 4-6.
Tarah Fisher/Grace Madigan lost their first match of sectional, 1-6 and 2-6; while Morgan Miller was ousted in the first round by her Alleman opponent, 0-6 and 1-6.
“Morgan ran into a tough opponent, but she still played really well,” said Putman. “Rori’s and Jessi’s first few sets at sectionals were phenomenal, and they were right on the cusp of breaking through. Tarah and Grace were very nervous and tense, but, once they got out of that, they played really well.”
Legatzke will be in action this weekend at the IHSA State Finals in Buffalo Grove, Oct. 24-26.
