  • While the Green Machine didn’t quite get out to the start they had hoped Friday night in Streator, Geneseo rebounded to bring home a 41-20 victory over the Bulldogs.
The game opened with Streator forcing a fumble on Geneseo’s first play from scrimmage, which set up the Drew Muntz 1-yard TD run only a minute and a half into the contest. The PAT kick failed to put Streator up 6-0.
“Give credit to Streator. They are a solid team and they came out hot,” said head coach Larry Johnsen. “They did a nice job on the first drive, but, fortunately, we were able to bounce back. We had some guys step up tonight.”
Geneseo answered back 20 seconds later with a 52-yard TD run by Rayce Singbush, and Wolak added the PAT kick to give Geneseo the 7-6 lead.
It was all Geneseo in the second quarter as the Green Machine gave themselves a two touchdown lead at the half.
“Turnovers were huge, not just the turnovers, but where the turnovers were at,” said Johnsen. “This was a really good test for us because we had to win a close game.”
Luke Snyder connected with Singbush for a 53-yard TD reception, followed by Ryan Webster with a 2-yard TD run at the end of the half. Wolak added both PAT kicks to put Geneseo ahead 21-6 at the break.
Streator made the game a little closer about 2 minutes into the third quarter when Colton Olson caught a 16-yard pass from Nick Harcar, and then Olson converted the two-point conversion pass from Caleb Spears to make it a 21-14 ball game in favor of the visitors.
The Green Machine responded late in the third quarter when Snyder busted out a 54-yard run for pay dirt, and Wolak split the uprights to give Geneseo the 28-14 advantage.
Snyder wasn’t done as he posted two more scores in the fourth quarter for the Green Machine — a 6-yard TD run and a 45-yard TD run. Wolak only made one of the two PAT kicks. Geneseo led 41-14 halfway through the fourth quarter.
Streator managed to sneak another score in just before the final horn sounded with a 3-yard run by Kyle Kurdziolek, but the PAT run failed.
The Green Machine offense totaled 339 yards of offense (276 rushing and 63 passing).
Snyder led the charge with 110 rushing yards on seven carries, and also completed two passes to Singbush for 53 yards and Webster for 10 yards.
Singbush raked in 70 yards on nine touches; followed by Webster with 57 yards on 12 carries; Jacob Eaker, 38 yards on nine carries; Joey Medina, 3 yards on one carry and Tyler Mackey had one carry for a negative 2 yards.
Page 2 of 2 - The Geneseo defense held Streator to 184 rushing yards and 70 passing yards for the night.
Grant Pritchard, Nick Verbeck and Joe Thomas came up with three fumble recoveries; while Pritchard, Verbeck and Kyle Patterson, all had tackles for a loss.
“This was good for us, and I hope it gives us confidence that we can handle adversity,” said Johnsen. “I am proud of our players because they didn’t panic.”
The Green Machine (7-1 overall and 4-0 in the NIB 12) look to win the outright conference title tonight on the road at 7:30 p.m. against LaSalle-Peru.
