    • email print
  • Before it was even the old Du Quoin Public Library next to Marks Bakery it housed the telephone operators of General Telephone & Electronics (GTE) who kept neighborhood Du Quoin "party line" conversations separated and placed long distance calls one at a time over a long oaken switchboard.
This beautiful old building will see an after-life in the coming days as the new Du Quoin Library of Arts--a new home to already accomplished Southern Illinois artists and to those who want to learn.
The Library of Arts founders are announcing Preview Week on Friday, Nov. 15, from 3 pm. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its location at the old Du Quoin Library at 8 South Washington Street, Du Quoin, Illinois.
Library of Arts provides an art gallery consisting of art displays by various artists in the area. Additionally, art classes are available for all ages and in various mediums, including water color and acrylic. Children's painting parties may be booked as well, according to accomplished Du Quoin artist Joyce Elledge who is working alongside many ladies to establish the new center.
    The Gallery will be open on Tuesday evening 5 to 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Memberships are available providing a 10% discount on events and classes and notification of upcoming events.
Business sponsorships are also available as a means of supporting the arts for the community.
Local organizations can rent one of the rooms for their meeting and enjoy a demonstration by one of the artists. Ask for details.
The Library of Arts is dedicated to promoting art culture and to providing various art forms to communities.
    Again, Preview Week is Nov. 15 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
