James “JW” Smith, 85, of Colona, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15 at Schroder Mortuary, Colona. A visitation will be held one hour prior to services. The family requests everyone please dress casually. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to the family.
He was born on May 6, 1928, in Purdin, Mo., the son of James W. and Leathia Bagley Smith Sr. He married Mayetta Mossbarger on Aug. 10, 1948, in Brookfield, Mo. James was a rodeo rider for 10 years and also farmed for 12 years while working for John Deere for 29-and-a-half years until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed camping, fishing and riding snowmobiles and motorcycles.
Survivors include his wife, Mayetta of Colona; children, Linda (Mike Seibert) Waddell of Andover; Donald (Diana) Smith of Colona and Charlie Smith of Colona; grandchildren, Donny and Nick Smith; Amy Dothard; Carla Johnson and Lori and Kelly Waddell; 12 great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and one great-great grandchild on the way; sisters, Norma Abbott and Janet Wingate, both of Missouri; and Judy Watson of Colona. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers
